Countdown to Hyperemesis Gravidarum Awareness Day!

May 15th is International HG Awareness Day (HGAD), and we’re raising awareness throughout the month! This Awareness Kit has messaging around the year’s international theme, #HGhope, shareable graphics, social media content, activities, and resources. Join us as we educate about hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).

The HER Foundation is the global voice of HG, and we are proud to celebrate and raise awareness about the long-term impact of Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Together, we can change the future for the next generation.

Annual HG Awareness Month Theme

The annual theme is decided in collaboration with leaders of HG organizations and groups from across the globe.

From our exciting new research finding GDF15 is the cause of HG, new HG clinics offering specialty care, and our many clinical resources, we believe the future for those with HG will be different.

Our theme for HG Awareness Month is HOPE.

  • What do you hope will change?
  • What do you hope changes in HG treatment? How would you like to see providers change their treatment of HG?
  • What do you wish others understood about HG?
  • What do you feel needs to change in order for HG to be a priority?
  • What do you hope is different for the next generation of children?

Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)

Hyperemesis Gravidarum or HG is defined as a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and debility due to severe nausea and/or vomiting, and may cause long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).

Mothers who experience HG have and increased risk of malnutrition, Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), sepsis, thiamin deficiency (TD), preeclampsia, hemorrhage, preterm labor, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD), embolism, anemia, heart issues, placental abruption, and organ failure.

Babies born after an HG pregnancy have an increased risk of Intrauterine Growth Restriction or Small for Gestational Age (IUGR/SGA), prematurity, neurodevelopmental issues, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language delay, Sensory Processing Disorder, learning disabilities, adult mental health issues, and adult cardiometabolic issues. 1 in 3 babies does not make it to term.
