In honor of HG Awareness Month, we are launching a new Patient Treatment Brochure and have expanded our HG treatment algorithm. Mothers struggling with HG can now find all the essential information on managing HG in a single, printable brochure. It’s a perfect reference for medications and HER resources. Clinicians now can find not only guidance for medications and nutrition, but also additional tips and essential insights into overall management of HG.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and inability to function due to severe nausea and/or vomiting. Without adequate treatment, HG may cause pregnancy complications and long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).
HG is usually diagnosed if a patient has nausea and vomiting that requires prescription medication and/or intravenous therapy due to severe nausea and vomiting with weight loss and debility. HG is caused in part due to genes (e.g. GDF15) that reduce appetite, alter taste, and cause nausea, vomiting and muscle wasting. Additionally, critical nutrient deficiencies (e.g. B1, magnesium, and potassium) worsen symptoms and may increase GDF15 hormone levels. (hyperemesis.org/research/#cause)
