Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) can be one of the most difficult and isolating experiences a woman will ever face. But amid that suffering, many survivors discover something unexpected: each other. The friendships created by HG provide comfort, validation, and hope during some of life’s darkest moments. And these friendships often continue decades after recovery. Sarah M. celebrates these connections in her poem, “Sisterhood.”

Sisterhood by Sarah M.
I always wanted a sister
when I was little
I wanted to share secrets
play in the dirt
find earthworms.
And then when we were older
she’d look out for me
in the club
we would dance round handbags
with laughter we’d forget
that boy who caused me pain
now what was his name?
I desperately needed a sister
when I was ill with HG
I wanted her to come round
meet all the demands
housework, kids,
But most of all
I just wanted her empathy.
I always wanted a sister
but now I see
I have a roomful of sisters
they are there for me
This is the sisterhood of HG
