- Did you ever feel dismissed by medical professionals or people around you? Please share about that.
- What was the hardest part about getting others to believe how sick you were?
- How did it feel when someone finally believed you?
- What do you wish people understood about HG that they often don’t?
- How did being disbelieved impact your emotional well-being?
- What barriers did you face in accessing proper treatment?
Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)
Hyperemesis Gravidarum or HG is defined as a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and debility due to severe nausea and/or vomiting, and may cause long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).
Mothers who experience HG have an increased risk of malnutrition, Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), sepsis, thiamin deficiency (TD), preeclampsia, hemorrhage, preterm labor, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD), embolism, anemia, heart issues, placental abruption, and organ failure.
Babies born after an HG pregnancy have an increased risk of Intrauterine Growth Restriction or Small for Gestational Age (IUGR/SGA), prematurity, neurodevelopmental issues, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language delay, Sensory Processing Disorder, learning disabilities, adult mental health issues, and adult cardiometabolic issues. 1 in 3 babies does not make it to term.
HER Foundation envisions a world where all pregnant patients have access to compassionate, effective, and safe care for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, so patients and their children survive pregnancy and have a healthy future. Since 2000, we have helped over 3 million people. Our programs, including the research discovery that GDF15 is the cause of HG, physician outreach, clinical resources, and support programs, are improving outcomes for mothers and babies. We believe the future for those with HG will be different.

Please share my post and help raise awareness about HG. It isn't just women suffering. It can lead to a lifetime of issues:
- Babies born after an HG pregnancy have an increased risk of prematurity and neurodevelopmental issues.
- About 1 in 2 HG patients are diagnosed with postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.
