We created this tool to help guide you through the steps of self advocacy during Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG).
Know the Details
Track symptoms & medications with our free HELP Score. Share the Insights Report with your care team which also shows your weight loss, food/fluid intake, and output (urine, etc).
Don’t Go Alone
Bring someone to your appointments to help you communicate your needs. Prepare a list of questions in advance. Print & share HER’s evidence-based resources with your provider: treatment algorithm, protocol, and research.
Talk about Treatment
Talk about medication dosing, route (non oral), effectiveness, and managing side-effects. Ask explicitly for the medication you think will help you.
Request Vitamins, Electrolytes, and Nutrition
Request vitamins and electrolytes in IVs, and be open to a trial of a feeding tube for supplemental nutrition. Take B1/thiamin.
Maintain Communication
Ask how to contact your provider directly if treatment isn’t working. Sign up for the patient portal, if possible, to send messages, review information and check for errors. Seek a second opinion or change providers if needed.
Seek Support
Inquire about a case manager from your insurance. Seek support from the HER Foundation & share resources with family.
