Drug Information Consultation
Introduction The HER Foundation is looking to update the medication information page on its website.
This consultation will address if there are foreign names of the antiemetics listed on the HER Foundation’s medication page as well as if they are available in dosage forms other than oral tablets and capsules.
Methodology The USP Dictionary of USAN and International Drug Names was used to find foreign generic names of the antiemetics if they exist. Each product was individually searched and reviewed for alternative foreign names. Lexicomp was used to find foreign brand names of the antiemetics. Each product was individually searched and its “Brand Names: International” section was reviewed.
Clinical Pharmacology was used to find the available dosage forms of the antiemetics. Each product was individually searched and its “How Supplied” section was reviewed for dosage forms other than oral tablets and capsules.
Results Only two products were found to have foreign generic names that differ from those used in the US – meclizine and scopolamine. Meclizine’s international nonproprietary name (INN) and British Approved Name (BAN) is meclozine, and scopolamine’s BAN is hyoscine.1 The international brand names of each product are listed in the table below.
