May 15th is International HG Awareness Day (HGAD), and we’re making an IMPACT throughout the month! Join us to spread awareness and educate about HG's Impact! This Awareness Kit has messaging around the year’s international theme, #HGimpact, shareable graphics, social media content, activities, and resources. The HER Foundation is the global voice of HG, and we are proud to celebrate and raise awareness about the longterm impact of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Together, we can change the future for the next generation.

HG's Impact

Hyperemesis Gravidarum or HG is defined as a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and debility due to severe nausea and/or vomiting, and may cause long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).

Mothers who experience HG have and increased risk of malnutrition, Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), sepsis, thiamin deficiency (TD), preeclampsia, hemorrhage, preterm labor, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD), embolism, anemia, heart issues, placental abruption, and organ failure.

Babies born after an HG pregnancy have an increased risk of Intrauterine Growth Restriction or Small for Gestational Age (IUGR/SGA), prematurity, neurodevelopmental issues, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language delay, Sensory Processing Disorder, learning disabilities, adult mental health issues, and adult cardiometabolic issues. 1 in 3 babies does not make it to term.
