SUMMARY:Heart Health Month
DESCRIPTION:February is Heart Health Month\, and we want you to protect your heart before\, during\, and after HG. \n\nFour Ways to Protect Your Heart\n1. Take your thiamin. Thiamin deficiency (wet beriberi) can affect your heart. Recommendation is 100 mg/day before 20 weeks and 250 mg/day after 20 weeks. \n2. Ask if an EKG is needed if you’re on multiple medications. If everything is normal\, you don’t have to do anything else. Arrhythmias can result from certain combinations of multiple meds in sensitive patients or if there are electrolyte abnormalities. \n3. Learn how to take your pulse. Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) can be a sign of dehydration\, vitamin deficiencies\, or even sepsis (especially if you have a PICC\, midline\, or other catheter). \n4. Check your blood pressure at the doctor’s office\, at a pharmacy\, or even at home!  Those with prolonged HG are twice as likely to develop preeclampsia and more likely to experience eclamptic seizures\, and high blood pressure in later pregnancy or postpartum can be a symptom. \nIt’s important to be proactive with your treatment and ask you doctor is you have any heart symptoms. \n

SUMMARY:Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:During Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week\, we’re reminded of the unique challenges faced by mothers\, particularly those with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). HG is not just a physical condition; it significantly impacts mental health. \n*HG patients have significantly increased risk of maternal mental health diagnosis secondary to HG including PTSD\, depression\, and anxiety. \nLearn more about:\n\nPMADs\nPTSD\nResearch\nHER Support Groups\n\nShare the facts:\n \n~1 in 2 of HG patients are diagnosed with postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder (Tain et al.\, 2016). \nHG is one of the top 4 predictors of Postpartum Depression (Munk-Olsen et. al.\, 2022). \n26% of HG patients experience suicidal ideations (Nana et. al.\, 2022). \n18% of HG patients meet full criteria of PTSD (Christodoulou et al.\, 2011). \nA little over 1/2 (52%) considered termination (Nana et al.\, 2022). \n80% of women who experienced HG report negative psychosocial outcome(s) or economic consequences (Poursharif et al.\, 2007). \nWHAT IS HG?\nAt least 1 million women are estimated to suffer from a serious pregnancy disease each year that takes the lives of thousands of babies (and some mothers) due to chronic malnutrition and dehydration from debilitating nausea and vomiting. The disease known as HG (hyperemesis gravidarum) is often misunderstood\, unrecognized or assumed to be psychological\, and thus is inadequately treated. This means women suffer to the point of being traumatized\, choosing therapeutic termination\, or having serious short and long-term health issues. The children\, too often\, are affected as well. With proper treatment\, most issues can be minimized or prevented\, and the impact can be reduced. Be HG aware\, educate others\, and donate to support education and research (HG research rarely gets grant funding!!). \n*HG: hyperemesis gravidarum (hyper = excessive\, emesis = vomiting\, gravidarum = in pregnancy) \n**Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss\, malnutrition\, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the mom-to-be and the newborn(s).

SUMMARY:Bereaved Mother's Day
DESCRIPTION:Bereaved Mother’s Day is the first Sunday in May each year. This is a day for mothers and parents to remember the children they have lost.  HG increases the risk of miscarriage\, unwanted termination\, stillbirth\, and neonatal loss. We know the grief is great\, but all of us at the HER Foundation are here for you. You are not alone. \nHyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) not only impacts physical health but also increases the risk of miscarriage\, unwanted termination\, stillbirth\, and neonatal loss. We envision a future where no one has to endure such suffering due to HG. #HGhope \nHER resources: \n\nHER memorial page\nHER Loss Support Group\nGrief Information

SUMMARY:World Maternal Mental Health Day
DESCRIPTION:Observed on the first Wednesday in May\, this day is dedicated to supporting each other through the worldwide journey of maternal mental health. Far too often\, pregnant and postpartum mothers suffer in silence\, with symptoms going undetected and untreated. Today\, we raise our voices\, share our stories\, and shine a light on the often unseen emotional toll of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Whether you are currently struggling or healing from past experiences\, your journey matters. Every mot \nher’s voice strengthens this movement. \nMothers facing conditions like Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) are at significantly higher risk for maternal mental health complications: \n\n26% report suicidal ideation \n18% meet the criteria for PTSD\nAround 50% experience trauma\n52% consider pregnancy termination \n\n50% are diagnosed with a postpartum psychiatric condition \nOver 80% face psychosocial struggles \n\nThese statistics reflect real\, lived experiences. SUMMARY:Children’s Mental Health Day
DESCRIPTION:HG Progress 2025: Hope for the Next Generation \nChild’s Mental Health Awareness Day is a powerful reminder that our choices\, advocacy\, and research now shape the health and wellbeing of future generations. At the HER Foundation\, we envision a future where Hyperemesis Gravidarum no longer affects pregnancies or the lifelong health of mothers and children. That future starts with the progress we make today. \nDid you know that research shows higher rates of mental health concerns in children born after a pregnancy affected by severe HG? Studies have found that babies exposed to HG in utero are more likely to experience emotional or behavioral challenges in adulthood (Wang et al.\, 2020). HG pregnancies are also at greater risk for preterm birth\, which is independently linked to long-term mental health issues (Shaw et al.\, 2023). \nThis makes early and effective treatment of HG essential. Supporting mothers and families during and after pregnancy does not only improve their quality of life in the moment; it helps protect the mental health of their children for years to come. \nWe share this knowledge to empower you. Advocate for early\, aggressive care. Ask the right questions. Support your child if challenges arise\, knowing you are not alone. Understanding these risks gives families the tools they need to seek care and push for better outcomes. \nRead the research: hyperemesis.org/research/risks-outcomes \nHelp us continue the progress. By raising awareness\, advocating for better care\, and supporting families living with HG\, we are creating a healthier future for the next generation. \nTogether\, we offer something powerful: hope. Hope that our children will grow up in a world where HG is better understood\, better treated\, and far less likely to shape their futures. \nResources: www.hyperemesis.org/general/managing-challenging-behaviors/ \n

SUMMARY:Mother's Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s Day: Honoring the Strength Behind the Struggle \nMother’s Day is a time to celebrate the love\, resilience\, and sacrifices of mothers everywhere — but for those who have endured or are enduring Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)\, it can also be a day full of complex emotions. \nHG is more than “morning sickness.” It is a life-altering\, often traumatic condition that can leave lasting physical and emotional scars. For many\, it turns what should be a joyful experience into a fight for survival — for both mother and baby. The journey is isolating\, exhausting\, and all too often misunderstood. \nThis Mother’s Day\, we recognize the unique strength of HG mothers: \n\nThe ones who have fought through relentless nausea\, dehydration\, and hospitalizations\nThe ones who have made heartbreaking decisions no mother should have to face\nThe ones still grieving losses or navigating postpartum recovery\nThe ones parenting through trauma while trying to heal\n\n\nYour courage\, your voice\, and your story matter. \nAt the HER Foundation\, we see you. We honor every step of your journey\, whether it was one pregnancy or many\, whether you are still in it or reflecting back. You are not alone. \nAs we celebrate motherhood\, let’s also raise awareness\, offer compassion\, and advocate for better care for all who experience HG. Every mother deserves support\, not just on Mother’s Day\, but every day. \nHappy Mother’s Day to all the warrior moms. We honor you. \nResource: National Maternal Mental Health Line: 1-833-943-5746 (1-833-9-HELP4MOMS)

SUMMARY:Maternal Sepsis Week
DESCRIPTION:Maternal Sepsis Week: Knowledge Is Power \nThis week is Maternal Sepsis Week\, a time to share helpful\, empowering information that can support those who have experienced Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). \nSepsis is a complication that can arise from infection. For those with HG\, the need for IV treatments\, hospital care\, or nutritional support may slightly increase the risk\, which is why awareness and early recognition are so important. \nThe good news is that with the right care\, sepsis is often preventable and treatable. Knowing what to look for\, like a fever\, unusual tiredness\, fast heartbeat\, confusion\, or ongoing pain\, helps ensure that concerns are taken seriously and addressed quickly. \nThis week is about more than just raising awareness. It is about moving toward better care. It is about listening to mothers\, taking symptoms seriously\, and making sure no one feels overlooked or alone. \nEveryone deserves to feel safe\, supported\, and informed before\, during\, and after pregnancy. \nTake Action:\nLearn the signs. Spread the word. Support a friend. The HER Foundation’s website provides access to trusted resources\, patient stories\, and ways to advocate for better maternal care. Together\, we can protect and empower mothers. \nLearn more \nSigns of sepsis

SUMMARY:International Nurses Day
DESCRIPTION:Honoring Nurses and Midwives: Caring for Those Who Care for Us \nTo all the nurses and midwives out there\, your love and care make all the difference for HG patients. Your dedication\, compassion\, and strength help families through some of their most challenging moments. \nIn recognition of International Nurses Day 2025\, we join the International Council of Nurses in celebrating this year’s theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.” This message reminds us that when we support and invest in nurses\, we are strengthening not only individuals but entire health systems and communities. \nDo you know a nurse or midwife who deserves recognition for the incredible support they offer to those with Hyperemesis Gravidarum? Help us honor them by recommending them for our professional referral network. \nThank you for caring for patients\, for families\, and for the future.
