SUMMARY:PTSD Awareness Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:With the advances in nutrition and fluid replacements\, most patients survive hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) with few life-threatening complications. However\, the stress\, pain\, and helplessness of HG cause persistent psychological distress for many women. \nPTSS is common following HG pregnancies and is associated with negative life outcomes including inability to breastfeed\, marital problems\, financial problems\, and inability of self-care. \nSource: Posttraumatic stress symptoms following pregnancy complicated by hyperemesis gravidarum. — The Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine\, 2011.\nLearn about trauma after HG here.

SUMMARY:World Breastfeeding Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action promotes World Breast Feeding Week from August 1-7. The 2023 theme is Enabling breastfeeding: making a difference for working parents. While there are benefits for breastfeeding\, not all HG survivors are able to breastfeed. Learn more about breastfeeding across the globe from the World Health Organization (WHO).\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nAny conversation about breastfeeding includes the benefits of breastfeeding. The conversation must also acknowledge health and other factors in a mother’s ability or decision to breastfeed. “Breastfeeding is not an option for every mother. Women who have struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)\, who are facing malnutrition\, trauma\, and other complications may have greater difficulty successfully breastfeeding or may decide to nourish their baby with formula. Whether or not to breastfeed can be a complex\, personal choice. In the end\, the best choice for you is the one that ensures the well-being of you and your child.”\n\n \n\nLearn more about breastfeeding across the globe from the World Health Organization (WHO).\n\n \n\n#WBW2023\n\n\n\n\n \n\nHG is hyperemesis gravidarum: a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause malnutrition\, dehydration\, and debility due to severe nausea and vomiting\, and may cause long-term health issues for mom and baby.

SUMMARY:Breastfeeding After HG with Susan Fuchs
DESCRIPTION:Join our Instagram Live with Susan Fuchs\, MS\, IBCLC\, “Reclaiming Your Power Through Breastfeeding” on Sunday\, August 13th\, 2023\, at 5pm Pacific. Hear Susan share her HG journey and expertise on breastfeeding in a conversation with Kimber MacGibbon\, RN. \nLearn more about: \n\nHow breastmilk adapts to baby’s needs.\nHow breastfeeding impacts our health.\nHow breastfeeding affects mental health.\nHow breastfeeding and weaning are affected by HG.\n35% of HG patients do not breastfeed compared to 11% of controls.\n\nSubmit your questions here. \nBreastfeeding is not an option for every mother. Those who have struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)\, who are facing malnutrition\, trauma\, and other complications may have greater difficulty successfully breastfeeding or may decide to nourish their baby with formula. Whether or not to breastfeed can be a complex\, personal choice. In the end\, the best choice is the one that ensures the well being of you and your child. Read our blog. \nHyperemesis Gravidarum (HG): a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause malnutrition\, dehydration\, and debility due to severe nausea and vomiting\, and may cause long-term health issues for mom and baby. \nSHARE THE FACTS\n\nHG\, hyperemesis gravidarum\, is a pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss\, malnutrition\, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting.\nHG is not the “morning sickness” of healthy\, normal pregnancies. It is a distinct diagnosis marked by severe and relentless symptoms that pose significant risks to the health of both mother and baby. Over 1/3rd of HG babies do not make it to term.\nHG babies are at increased risk for low birth weight\, small size for gestational age\, and preterm birth. In utero exposure to HG is linked to a 3.6-fold increased risk of emotional/behavioral & developmental disorders.\nNearly 20% of HG pregnancies are lost to therapeutic terminations\, citing “no hope for relief.” Current treatments are not adequate to prevent termination of these planned\, wanted pregnancies.\nMothers with HG’s most severe forms can experience pneumothorax\, organ rupture\, retinal detachment and blindness\, eardrum and jaw damage\, rib fractures\, esophageal tears\, the neurological syndrome Wernicke’s encephalopathy\, or even death.\n18% of women report full criteria of post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) following an HG pregnancy. More than half of mothers have post-traumatic stress symptoms.\nIn 2009\, inpatient treatment for HG in the U.S. cost more than $250\,000\,000. HG is the leading cause of hospitalization in early pregnancy\, and is second only to preterm labor as the most common overall cause of hospitalization during pregnancy.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sepsis Awareness Month 2023
DESCRIPTION:September is Sepsis Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)\, sepsis is a leading cause of maternal mortality. Hyperemesis Gravidarum significantly increases risk of sepsis because of reduced immune function\, invasive procedures\, and urinary tract infections. If you suspect sepsis\, get immediate care. Every hour matters. \nSepsis is when the body’s response to an existing infection injures its own tissues and organs. Signs of sepsis include fever (higher or lower than normal)\, diarrhea or vomiting\, abdominal pelvic pain/tenderness\, confusion\, and signs of infection. \n🔹Learn more.\n🔹Signs of sepsis.

SUMMARY:Prematurity Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is one of the leading causes of prematurity and results in babies that are small for gestational age and growth restricted. \nSupport HER Foundation’s efforts to improve the care of HG mothers and prevent prematurity through research and education. \nWhat you can do to raise awareness: \n\nTalk about it. Share your story or the stories of others with your friends\, family\, and community. The more people who know about premature birth and HG\, the more likely they are to support awareness and research.\nGet involved the HER Foundation. Sign up to volunteer for the HER foundation to raise awareness of HG and premature birth. You can volunteer your time\, donate money\, or simply spread the word about our work.\nUse social media. Share information about premature birth and HG on your social media accounts. Use relevant hashtags\, such as #PrematureAwarenessMonth and #HGAwareness\, so that your posts can reach a wider audience.\n\n\n\n\nShare the Facts: \n\nPreterm birth is delivery prior than 37 weeks.\nWomen with a history of HG were likely to have an increased risk of preterm birth\, regardless of ondansetron exposure (M.S. Fejzo et al.\, 2016).\nHG is also associated with poor fetal/child outcomes including a 4-fold increased risk of preterm birth (R. Tian et al.\, 2016).

Mogensen is a registered dietitian and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Nutrition. She is a national leader at ASPEN and specializes in managing parenteral (intravenous) and enteral (tube feeding) nutrition\, malnutrition\, and home infusion. \n  \nWe’ll discuss:\n\nWhen is nutritional therapy needed for HG?\nHow can we reduce the risk of complications from intravenous therapy (IV)?\nWhat are the risks of nutritional therapy for HG?\nHow is refeeding syndrome prevented?\nHow does malnutrition affect mom and baby?\n\nHyperemesis Gravidarum (HG): a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause malnutrition\, dehydration\, and debility due to severe nausea and vomiting. It can also lead to long-term health problems for mom and baby. \nRegister to Receive Reminders \nGIVEAWAY\nOne lucky live participant will be randomly chosen to receive a special gift from us! 🎁 \n \nJoin and engage with us during our Instagram Live on Sunday\, November 19th\, 2023! \nWays to engage with us during the live: \n🙋 Ask a question!\n📝 Share a quick experience related to our topic.\n🌎 Let us know where you’re joining from!\n🤰 Share where you are in your journey. \nAfter the live\, we’ll choose someone and DM the lucky winner! Don’t miss out – see you there! \nSHARE THE HG FACTS\n\nHG\, hyperemesis gravidarum\, is a pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss\, malnutrition\, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting.\nHG is not the “morning sickness” of healthy\, normal pregnancies. It is a distinct diagnosis marked by severe and relentless symptoms that pose significant risks to the health of both mother and baby. Over 1/3rd of HG babies do not make it to term.\nHG babies are at increased risk for low birth weight\, small size for gestational age\, and preterm birth. In utero\, exposure to HG is linked to a 3.6-fold increased risk of emotional/behavioral & developmental disorders.\nNearly 20% of HG pregnancies are lost to therapeutic terminations\, citing “no hope for relief.” Current treatments are not adequate to prevent the termination of these planned\, wanted pregnancies.\nMothers with HG’s most severe forms can experience pneumothorax\, organ rupture\, retinal detachment and blindness\, eardrum and jaw damage\, rib fractures\, esophageal tears\, the neurological syndrome Wernicke’s encephalopathy\, or even death.\n18% of women report complete post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) criteria following an HG pregnancy. More than half of mothers have post-traumatic stress symptoms.\nIn 2009\, inpatient treatment for HG in the U.S. cost more than $250\,000\,000. HG is the leading cause of hospitalization in early pregnancy and is second only to preterm labor as the most common overall cause of hospitalization during pregnancy.\n\nLearn more: HG Fact Sheet \n

SUMMARY:World Folic Acid Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:January 1-7 marks World Folic Acid Awareness Week. Shedding light on the significance of folic acid (FA) in our lives\, particularly for those with HG. \nWhat do you know? \n\nFolic acid is the synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9).\nEnriched foods\, such as cereals\, incorporate folic acid.\nMost people do not get enough folate in their diet which increases health risks.\nObtaining sufficient folate from food proves challenging\, necessitating the use of a pill.\nThose who may become pregnant should take it daily.\nFA pills are critical during the first trimester to prevent defects in the baby’s brain and spine\, and throughout pregnancy to reduce pregnancy complications.\nAt least 600 mcg per day is required during pregnancy\, but more may be helpful during HG.\nMost prenatal vitamins have FA\, but the pills are easier to tolerate when sick.\nFA can be given by IV and may be needed when intake is limited for more than a few weeks.\nThose with the gene variants\, like MTHFR\, may need active or methylated folate. SUMMARY:Maternal Health Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:On Maternal Health Awareness Day\, we join ACOG and the maternal health community to highlight maternal morbidity and mortality\, and its consequences for the next generation. \nHyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)* is not morning sickness. HG is a serious medical condition with a far-reaching impact that can last\, not just for the term of a pregnancy\, but for the remaining lives of mother and child(ren). Mothers can suffer from include neurological disorders\, gastrointestinal damage\, malnutrition and dehydration\, and even organ failure. Children can suffer from low birth weight\, intracranial hemorrhage (caused by vitamin K deficiency)\, intrauterine growth retardation\, stillbirth\, brain damage\, infant disorders (neurological\, respiratory\, and circulatory)\, and abnormal development of some organs. One in three babies does not make it to term. \nHowever\, while the devastating complications of HG are numerous\, the silver lining is that a great many of them are preventable with timely\, effective\, adequate medical care. To this end\, the HER Foundation launched the 1 MOM Is 2 Many campaign. \nLearn more about how you can help eliminate preventable complications of HG. \n  \nHG tools for Maternal Health Awareness Day: \n\nClinical Tools to understand how to manage HG treatments.\nGet Help Now\nAbout HG for Family\nMaternal & Child Outcomes research\nSupport Groups

SUMMARY:Heart Health Month
DESCRIPTION:February is Heart Health Month\, and we want you to protect your heart before\, during\, and after HG. \n\nFour Ways to Protect Your Heart\n1. Take your thiamin. Thiamin deficiency (wet beriberi) can affect your heart. Recommendation is 100 mg/day before 20 weeks and 250 mg/day after 20 weeks. \n2. Ask if an EKG is needed if you’re on multiple medications. If everything is normal\, you don’t have to do anything else. Arrhythmias can result from certain combinations of multiple meds in sensitive patients or if there are electrolyte abnormalities. \n3. Learn how to take your pulse. Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) can be a sign of dehydration\, vitamin deficiencies\, or even sepsis (especially if you have a PICC\, midline\, or other catheter). \n4. Check your blood pressure at the doctor’s office\, at a pharmacy\, or even at home!  Those with prolonged HG are twice as likely to develop preeclampsia and more likely to experience eclamptic seizures\, and high blood pressure in later pregnancy or postpartum can be a symptom. \nIt’s important to be proactive with your treatment and ask you doctor is you have any heart symptoms. \n

SUMMARY:Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:During Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week\, we’re reminded of the unique challenges faced by mothers\, particularly those with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). HG is not just a physical condition; it significantly impacts mental health. \n*HG patients have significantly increased risk of maternal mental health diagnosis secondary to HG including PTSD\, depression\, and anxiety. \nLearn more about:\n\nPMADs\nPTSD\nResearch\nHER Support Groups\n\nShare the facts:\n \n~1 in 2 of HG patients are diagnosed with postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder (Tain et al.\, 2016). \nHG is one of the top 4 predictors of Postpartum Depression (Munk-Olsen et. al.\, 2022). \n26% of HG patients experience suicidal ideations (Nana et. al.\, 2022). \n18% of HG patients meet full criteria of PTSD (Christodoulou et al.\, 2011). \nA little over 1/2 (52%) considered termination (Nana et al.\, 2022). \n80% of women who experienced HG report negative psychosocial outcome(s) or economic consequences (Poursharif et al.\, 2007). \nWHAT IS HG?\nAt least 1 million women are estimated to suffer from a serious pregnancy disease each year that takes the lives of thousands of babies (and some mothers) due to chronic malnutrition and dehydration from debilitating nausea and vomiting. The disease known as HG (hyperemesis gravidarum) is often misunderstood\, unrecognized or assumed to be psychological\, and thus is inadequately treated. This means women suffer to the point of being traumatized\, choosing therapeutic termination\, or having serious short and long-term health issues. The children\, too often\, are affected as well. With proper treatment\, most issues can be minimized or prevented\, and the impact can be reduced. Be HG aware\, educate others\, and donate to support education and research (HG research rarely gets grant funding!!). \n*HG: hyperemesis gravidarum (hyper = excessive\, emesis = vomiting\, gravidarum = in pregnancy) \n**Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss\, malnutrition\, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the mom-to-be and the newborn(s).
